Jacqueline was enjoying the charmed country life in her rural Devon farm house surrounded by ponies, dogs, ducks and chickens, but misfortune was laying just around the corner.
Her idyllic country life was to be turned on it’s head when her husband’s career as an Exeter based broker, suddenly ended through no fault of his own.
Being a strong willed woman she decided to bounce back by making fruit cakes on her aga, armed with just a handful of cake trays, mixer, greaseproof paper and a friends 200 year old recipe.
Baking just 9 cakes a day, she started selling at fairs and charity events, success was soon to come and the following year 900 Christmas cakes were made and sold.
Through hard work, tenacity and a will to succeed, Mrs Gill managed to establish sales into some of the finest fine food outlets in London and across the country.
Year on year the company grew gaining a reputation as one of the finest artisan cake bakers of the West Country, refusing to use nothing but the very best ingredients, something which the current chief baker, Lisa Pike, recognised and wouldn’t dream of changing.
